Fox News, Giving it 193%

(thanks to @rod3000)
There are of course logical explanations for getting back a result over 100%. A pie chart, however, is not going to show you what they are. In fact I hereby award this chart Most Eggregious Use of a Pie Chart in a Broadcast Medium. Bravo Fox!

Guess how many cases of Swine Flu have been confirmed in Australia?

This carto-monstrosity shows “suspected” cases, according to, well, they didn’t say.
Update: The above graphic was from April 2009. Swine Flu started to hit Australia in June 2009, according to Wolfram Alpha, which provides nice clear charts and cites all its sources.

Today I’m not doing a redrawing; I don’t need to. The magnificent Mark Newman, one of the authors of The Atlas of the Real World has done it for me.
Since my redrawing of the Presidential Candidates’ Tax Plans has drawn a political crowd, I thought I’d post this one, just in case there’s anyone who [...]

There's a graph that's doing the rounds, showing the differences between the Republican and Democrat tax cut proposals. It's mostly being sent by Obama supporters, because it shows that Obama is not in fact planning to raise taxes - he's planning to cut them for all but the very, very rich. However when I saw the graph, I couldn't help but notice some problems with it.

Ice Age Redrawn

Last week I complained bitterly about a graph that had all the data, but still failed to effectively tell readers how much CO2 there is in the atmosphere now, compared to previous epochs. By separating the key final data point out to a separate graph it had blown the opportunity to show a direct comparison. This gave the impression that the current level of CO2 is only marginally higher than previous peaks. Let's see if we can find the truth with a quick redrawing...
